Allow me to repeat that the ephemeral nature of graffiti and street art is fascinating. As soon as the artist completes her/his piece, weather begins to erode the artwork. Soon other artists paint over an existing piece. And, who knows why, some people simply deface or destroy the street art.
Serendipity is a word I associate with rail car art. As a freight train chugs past you at a crossing, you have only a second or two to see the artwork on the cars. One moment it is there before you, and in the blink of an eye it is gone; likely forever. Freight car art is fleeting … literally.
A street artist can tell someone to go to a specific address to see her/his work. A freight car artist cannot … he/she simply sends artwork out for the wider world to see.
I hope you enjoy the art show that traveled through Baltimore over the past 4-6 weeks.
